Looking for the finest fish and chips in the North East? We've got you covered. Be careful, though – these are dangerously delicious…

Think "YouGov poll" and you probably think about the outcomes of elections. But did you know the market research giant also conducted a poll about the fame and popularity of fish and chips?

You won't be surprised to learn that 100% of participants knew what fish and chips were. But the popularity of the dish is still striking, with just 10% saying they were neutral about it and a measly six percent who disliked it.

You can't describe British cuisine without mentioning fish and chips – and it seems to be held in high regard no matter where you are in the United Kingdom.

Northeast England is no exception. Whether you're looking for a late-night portion of fish and chips in a polystyrene carton or the North Sea's finest on a fancy plate, the North East has something for everyone.

A fish and chip dinner in the North East contains all the must-haves. But visitors to the area may be surprised by the prevalence of mushy peas – not to mention the use of gravy for dipping, not pouring.

So, without further ado, here are nine of the best fish and chips in the North East. Bon chippy tea!

1. Colmans at Fenwick, Newcastle upon Tyne

Since 1926, Colmans has been serving the people of South Shields and Newcastle upon Tyne with fish and chips. Its customers have included Hilary Clinton, James Corden and Sting.

Today, its menu offers all the classics along with daily specials caught from local day boats. It also has a hearty selection of soft drinks, hot drinks, wine, beer and cider.

Address: Whitecross Way, Eldon Square, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 7JG

2. The Harbour View, Seaton Sluice, Whitley Bay

Whitley Bay has some claim to be the fish and chips capital of the UK – and the Harbour View is a jewel in the crown. Its light, airy atmosphere and substantial portions make it a must-visit for the chippy tea connoisseur.

Address: 1-3 Beresford Rd, Seaton Sluice, Whitley Bay NE26 4DR

3. Coastline Fish and Chips, Blyth

Thirteen miles northeast of Newcastle upon Tyne and 16 miles north of Sunderland, the coastal town of Blyth is an integral port in the North East. It's also home to a place once dubbed the "best seaside fish and chips in the UK" by The Guardian – Coastline Fish and Chips.

Address: Links Rd, Blyth NE24 3PL

4. Fenham Fish Bar, Newcastle upon Tyne

West of Newcastle City Centre lies the area of Fenham. From Monday to Friday each week, locals and visitors are treated to fresh, cooked-to-order fish and chips at Fenham Fish Bar on Stamfordham Road. A great choice whether you're eating at home or on a night out.

Address:  21 Stamfordham Rd, Newcastle upon Tyne NE5 3JQ

5. Longsands Fish Kitchen, Tynemouth

Eight miles northeast of Newcastle is the coastal town of Tynemouth. Here, you'll find a fish and chip restaurant that's won awards for the quality of its grub.

Maybe there's something in the North Sea waters that makes the fish and chips at Longsands Fish Kitchen taste so good. Or perhaps it's inevitable that a town with the word "mouth" in its name should make so many mouths water.

Whatever the reason – and we suspect it's mainly down to the team's dedication and expertise – Longsands Fish Kitchen is well worth a visit.

Address: 27 Front St, Tynemouth, North Shields NE30 4DZ

6. Trenchers, Whitley Bay

Featured in Fry magazine's list of the 10 best fish and chip restaurants, Trenchers is another gem in Whitley Bay.

Need convincing? Then consider this customer review: "No improvement is necessary, the service was second to none and I felt valued." What more could you ask for?

7. SGF Fish & Chips, Newcastle upon Tyne

In 2035, SGF Fish & Chips – fondly known to regulars as "Westmoor Chippy" – will celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Ninety years in the game is a long time. But when you consider the freshness of the fish and the generosity of the portions, it's easy to see why Westmoor Chippy persists.

8. The Harbour Fish Bar, Amble

Once described as the friendliest port in England, Amble is now home to one of the best fish and chip shops in the North East. Seventy years old and going strong, it's a great destination for a traditional chippy tea.

9. Pantrini's, Whitley Bay

The brainchild of Italian immigrants to Newcastle, Pantrini's is an award-winning family-run restaurant just minutes from the beach. Take a look at its scrummy, crispy fare on Instagram – but be warned, your mouth may begin to water…

Fishy FAQs

  • Where were fish and chips invented?

The fish and chips you buy at a chippy originated in England in the 19th century. The dish probably came from Jewish immigrants from the Netherlands, who coated fish in flour and then fried it in oil.

  • Are fish and chips halal?

It depends. Some fish and chips are haram through cross-contamination with non-halal items or the use of beer in the batter. The simplest way to find out is to see if the vendor is certified halal or sells halal options.
