Looking forward to Christmas? Wondering how to make it run as smoothly as possible? Discover how renting a car could make all the difference.

Ah, Christmas. We all know 'tis the season to be jolly, but a less well-worn observation is that 'tis the season to travel too.

In 2022, an estimated
20 million car trips were made in the UK to see friends and family in the run-up to Christmas Day. This was an increase on previous years, in part because of train strikes. And while we don't have a crystal ball to hand, it's safe to say that numbers will be similar this year – not least because industrial action is likely to continue into Christmas.

If you're going to be one of those 20 million drivers, why not treat yourself to a rental car this year? There are all sorts of benefits that give it the edge over driving your own set of wheels. Here are eight of them...

1. It can help you budget

For many people, budgeting is as integral a part of Christmas as stockings and sleigh bells. This year, it's more important than ever as the economy continues to feel the pinch.

Car hire
may not seem like a priority in a wintry economic climate – but a positive thing about it is that it's transparent. It's easy to budget for hiring without receiving any nasty surprises.

Another financial benefit is that newer models use up less fuel. If you've got an old car and are going to make a long journey this Christmas, it could be cost-effective (and better for the planet) to hire a vehicle.

2. It's a way of treating yourself

Giving yourself a Christmas present is more and more common. Some would advocate for it as an act of self-care, while others would point to it as a smart consumer move. After all, it's a time when there are plenty of deals on.

What's more, even the most even-tempered of people would say that Christmas brings stresses with it. Why not alleviate some of that stress by getting yourself a nice gift?

A rental car is the perfect gift to give yourself this Christmas. You get to enjoy a smart, well-oiled machine. No need to hoover the back seats and check the tyre pressure of your own set of wheels. It's like a hotel on wheels or a party dress that you don't have to worry about keeping fresh.

Any driver can benefit from car rental in this way – but car lovers in particular are in for a treat. You get to borrow a vehicle you're not currently in a position to own and enjoy it for a good time, not a long time.

It can even serve as a nice long test drive. Who knows? Perhaps you'll find your next forever car.

3. It keeps you off public transport

Public transport is a wonderful thing, true – but nobody would say so at Christmastime. Even at a time when industrial action isn't a strong possibility, it's the peak period for unexpected and unwanted delays and cancellations.

That means taxis are often fully booked – not to mention more expensive than at other times of the year.

All of this can be avoided by getting yourself a good rental car for the season. Say goodbye to crowds and delays as you cruise along in your modern vehicle.

5. It gives you an advantage in the January sales

Fast-forward to January and the stores are full of discounted furniture and household appliances. Seen something you like? Great – but how are you going to get it home?

If you know that you're going to be looking for bulky goods in the January sales, you could do far worse than hire a van to make the experience plain sailing.

6. It allows you to upsize

If you're ferrying family this year, you might be surprised to find that your car is a bit small for the brood at large – especially when they arrive laden with luggage and gifts.

Car rental gives you the chance to try out different sizes of vehicles. There's no point buying a vehicle just for this one time of the year, so renting can make all the difference.

7. It means you don't have to worry about maintenance

We've said it before and we'll say it again – stress and Christmas go hand in hand. Chances are you'll have a to-do list longer than a Marvel movie. Do you really want to be doing routine car maintenance too?

"Merry Christmas! The car battery's dead" is something no one wants to hear as they chow down on their figgy pudding. With a rental car, you can rest assured that your vehicle's been recently serviced and is ready for the open road.

8. It can help reduce stress

All of these considerations add up to one big advantage – minimising stress at a time when most of us have a lot more on our plates than just sprouts and roast potatoes.

While Christmas is a special time for many, it can also cause a great deal of stress. A
YouGov poll, for instance, found that 51% of women and 35% of men found Christmas stressful.

Anything you can do to reduce this burden of stress is good for one and all. Hiring a car may not be the first thing that jumps to mind, but believe us – having a clean, valeted, modern vehicle to hand will make the Christmas period that bit more enjoyable.
