First-time van driver?

Here's what you need to know. Follow these tips for safety and comfort:

  • Take time to get your seat in the correct position before adjusting your mirrors.
  • Know your van's controls and features before you hit the road.
  • Know your hire van's dimensions to avoid guesswork in car parks.
  • Load heavier items towards the bottom of the van and make sure they're secured.
  • Stay calm – most van accidents are caused by rushing.
  • Check the weather – rain and wind can lead to skidding and weaving.
  • Know your speed limits – they're different from cars!
  • Position your vehicle carefully so you don't create any blind spots.
  • Be patient, courteous and friendly!

Van rental FAQs

  • What does the hire cost include?

For all our vans, hire cost includes:

    • Vehicle cost (including VAT)
    • Insurance (plus excess)
    • Mileage limits
    • 24/7 roadside assistance for the duration of the rental

Want to add a CDW (collision damage waiver) or additional drivers? Let us know and we'll sort it out for you.

  • What is the hire period?

We calculate our hires on a 24-hour basis – but aim to be flexible. Get in touch if you have any particular requirements.

  • Is insurance included?

Yes. Our insurance covers accidental damage – with the following exceptions:

    • Lost, stolen or damaged keys
    • Misfuelling (filling up your tank with the wrong kind of fuel)
    • Overhead damage above five feet
    • Tyres
    • Wheels
    • Windows and windscreens

These exceptions apply even if you've purchased a CDW (collision damage waiver).

  • How much is your insurance excess?

Our CDV and XLWB vans have an excess of £1,000. This goes up to £1,250 for Luton vans and £1,500 for low loaders.

  • What are your mileage limits?

All vans have a mileage limit of 250 miles per day (24-hour period). These are capped at 2,400 miles per 28-day period.

  • What happens after I book?

Whether you book online or in person, we'll send you a confirmation email. This will include confirmation of your deposit and a list of documents that you need to bring on collection.

Occasionally we won't be able to get you the van you've requested. In this situation, we'll be in touch to arrange an alternative.

  • What paperwork do I need?

Before you hit the road in your rental van, you need to show us the following documents – either as copies sent to info@mvhrental.co.uk or as originals on collection:

    • UK driver's licence. If you have an old-style paper licence, you need to bring a valid passport with at least six months left.
    • Two proofs of address from the last three months. This could include utility bills, council tax statements, bank statements or credit card statements.
    • DVLA check code. You need to create one on the government's website before collecting the vehicle.
  • What is your deposit policy?

Drivers aged 21-25 have to make a deposit of £500. This goes down to £250 for drivers over 25. Please note that these charges apply to the main named driver – not any additional drivers.

A deposit of 50% can be made to secure your booking. The rest is payable before you pick up the van from the showroom.

To get your deposit refunded, you'll need to return the van on time with a full tank of fuel. Any damage, speeding or parking fines or other traffic offences will also affect the return of your deposit.

If there is an issue and charges need to be applied, we'll be in touch to explain the situation.

Card issuers tend to process refunds within three to five working days – but you may have to wait up to ten days. If this happens, we unfortunately can't do anything about it.

We accept all major debit and credit cards with the following exceptions:

    • American Express
    • Diners Club cards
    • Electron
    • Pre-paid debit and credit cards

Want to hire a van for three days or less? You have the option of pre-authorising the deposit amount. This means that the issuing bank freezes the deposit and no physical transaction takes place.

  • Can I hire a van with penalty points on my licence?

We can't insure drivers who have more than six penalty points on their licence. This is stricter for drivers aged 21-24, who can't hire a van with more than three penalty points.

Drivers in that age band also can't rent a van if they've been banned from driving or had their licence revoked. Drivers over the age of 25 are ineligible if they've been banned from driving or had their licence revoked within the last ten years.

  • What is your fuel policy?

We operate a "full-to-full" fuel policy. You get a full tank on collection and it has to be full when you return it.

If the tank isn't full at the end of your hire period, you'll have to pay for the missing fuel – either a minimum charge of £30 or £4 a litre.
