Car rental FAQs

  • What does the hire cost include?

    All prices quoted include:

    • The cost of the vehicle (including VAT)
    • Basic insurance with the option for further coverage*
    • Generous Mileage limits
    • 24/7 roadside assistance for the duration of the rental

*There may be extra charges if you want a CDW (collision damage waiver) or cover for additional drivers. Get in touch to find out more.

  • What is the hire period?

Our rentals are typically split into 24-hour blocks – but we can sometimes be flexible. Let us know what you're after and we'll see what we can do.

  • What car hire insurance do I need?

Our insurance covers accidental damage. However, it doesn't cover the following – even if a CDW (collision damage waiver) has been purchased:

    • Damage above door height
    • Tyres (Charged at cost of repair or replacement)
    • Wheels
    • Windows and windscreens (Cost of repair or replacement)
    • Misfuelling (filling up with the wrong type of fuel)
    • Lost, stolen or damaged keys - This requires the vehicle to be recoded so average cost £300

Before you hire, you'll be asked to agree to these exceptions on the rental agreement.

  • How much is your insurance excess?

All our cars have an insurance excess of £1,000. Larger vehicles such as vans and minibuses carry excesses between £1250 to £2500.

You do have the option to take furhter coverage via collison damage waiver what lowers excess amounts.

  • What are your mileage limits?

All cars have a mileage limit of 200 miles per 24 hours.

All Vans have a mileage limit if 250 miles per 24 hours.

All minibuses come with unlimited mileage!

  • What happens after I book online?

After you've booked online, we'll send you an email confirmation. This is important reading – it will detail all the documentation that you need to bring when collecting your rental car.

If the car you've requested isn't available, a member of our team will be in touch to sort out an alternative.

  • What happens after I book in person?

After you've booked in person, we'll send you a confirmation email. This will include a confirmation of your deposit.

  • What paperwork do I need to provide?

All drivers MUST provide the following documents before the hire begins. Copies can be sent to info@mvhrental.co.uk or you can bring the originals on collection.

    • UK driver's licence. An old-style paper licence must be accompanied by a valid passport with a minimum of six months left before expiry.
    • Two proofs of address from the last three months. We can accept utility bills, bank statements, credit card statements and council tax statements. We can not accept proofs such as receipts, marketing / generic letters, Car V5's / Logbooks nor other forms of ID that are not  letter headed documents such as passport or bus pass.
    • DVLA check code. This must be created on the government's website before the hire begins.
  • What happens if the vehicle I request isn't available?

If the vehicle you requested isn't available, we can often provide other alternative to the next available size of car. If we're unable to offer an upgrade, we'll call to discuss your options.

  • What is your deposit policy?

For drivers aged 21-25, our standard security deposit is £500. This applies even if an additional driver is over 25.

For drivers over 25, our standard security deposit is £250.

Deposits are paid with the main driver's card upon collection.

Deposits are refundable when the car is returned on time with a full tank of fuel, no additional damage and no speeding or parking fines or other traffic offences.

Charges will be applied if any of the above criteria aren't met. In this eventuality, a member of our team will get in touch beforehand to explain the charges.

Most card issuers process refunds within three to five working days. It can occasionally take longer – if it does, this is out of our hands.

If you're hiring for three days or less, we can pre-authorise the deposit amount of £250 via a credit card in the main driver's name. This allows the issuing bank to freeze the deposit without a physical transaction taking place.

Please note that we're unable to accept American Express, Diners Club cards, Electron or pre-paid debit and credit cards.

  • What if I have penalty points on my licence?

We have the following criteria with regard to penalty points.

For drivers aged 21-24: we can't provide insurance if you have more than three penalty points on your licence. We also can't rent a car to you if you've been banned from driving or had your licence revoked.

For drivers over the age of 25: we can't lease a car to you if you have more than six penalty points on your licence. You're also not eligible if you've been banned from driving or had your licence revoked within the last ten years.

  • What is your fuel policy?

We operate a "full-to-full" fuel policy. This means that your car will have a full tank at the point of rental. It's your responsibility to return the car with a full tank.

If you don't, you'll have to pay a minimum charge of £30, or £4 a litre – whichever ensures that the tank is full.
